Bellevue Info Bytes

Between Lake Sammamish and Lake Washington there was some densely wooded land that was sparsely settled prior to the 1900ís that is home to what is currently known as Bellevue. Potential settlers were intimidated by the large area of bogs and thick forests. The Native Indian tribes in the area even preferred the plains east of the mountains and the coast to the west.

A considerable amount of mining began at the coal mine in Newcastle once coal was discovered in the coal creek region in 1867 and white settlers started arriving. In 1869, two rich adventure seekers from Seattle named Aaron Mercer and William Meydenbauer staked large claims area. Some other white settlers, including some veterans from the Civil War who received homesteads for their service, arrived in the region during the next four decades.

As an early occupation on the Eastside, mining was joined by logging, practically by necessity, while settlers were clearing land for their farms. The region got a schoolhouse and a post office during this time. The small community was named during the 1880ís. Although there are conflicting accounts attributed to the name Bellevue, which translates from French into Beautiful View, it is believed to be the result of the beautiful view from the window of the new post office. Bellevue was prospering farming community by the early 1900ís. The fertile soil was yielding abundant harvests, and the residents sold their vegetables and fruits and took them across Lake Washington by ferry to Seattle and in 1904, transported even farther once the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived.

Japanese immigrants, who arrived in Washington to improve and clear land claims, made the most of small plots that they leased. They developed a collective warehouse and were soon producing most of the vegetables and strawberries Bellevue. In 1925, the agricultural success of the small community was celebrated with the first Strawberry Festival.

In 1940, there was an influx of new residents after the first bridge across Lake Washington was completed. This was a major event for the small community of Bellevue. However, the federal government sent the Japanese- Americans away to internment camps once the US entered WW II. Unfortunately, these were the same Japanese-Americans that had put the community on the agricultural map.

Although there was another influx of residents to Bellevue, this was a great loss to the community. Then, one of the first suburban shopping centers in the nation called Bellevue Square was built. In 1946, a Fredrick and Nelson store was opened in Bellevue Square, which was celebrated with a radio broadcast complete with an orchestra.

The year 1953 brought the incorporation of Bellevue as a city. Up until 1960, City hall was a former schoolhouse that was provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, rent free. The new city started annexing neighboring regions and grew from an area of 4.7 square miles by Meydenbauer Bay to over 31 square miles.

During the last 20 years, the city has shed its status as a suburban community and has grown to skyscraper heights. Bellevue has become the center of high tech industries and a flourishing metropolis. Bellevue has a sparkling downtown area is constantly growing, provides apartments and condominiums for those residents who want to live in an urban setting in addition to office space for numerous professionals.
